Voting Methods
There are several methods available to cast a ballot - check out our Guide for Voters.
In order to vote, you must be an eligible elector, be accurately registered on the voters list, and be ready to show identification. Voting requirements are further explained here.
Polling Day
Many territorial residents will cast their ballot on polling day.
Polling day for a territorial general election must be the first Monday in October, four years after the last general election.
The next polling day is October 5, 2015.
There will be at least one polling station in each community. Voting is usually held at a school or community centre.
Advance Polls
Advance Polls are held in communities where there is no resident Returning Officer and there are more than 500 people; Advance Polls may also be held in some communities where there is no resident Returning Officer and there are fewer than 500 people.
Office of the Returning Officer
Eligible electors may vote in the Office of the Returning Officer during posted office hours.
Special Ballot
Special Ballots are available for those temporarily located outside of the territory during the election period.
Voting by Special Ballot can only be done if your name is already on the voters list in advance of the Official List of Electors being issued.
Those electors who are provided a Special Ballot, will also be provided instructions on how to complete and return the Special Ballot.
If you plan to vote by Special Ballot, you are strongly encouraged to apply to the Chief Electoral Officer as early as possible after the issue of the writs.
Multi-District Polls
Multi-District Polls will be conducted at some places where territorial residents from multiple electoral districts temporarily reside. During the 2011 election, multi-district polls were held at four correctional facilities and at three college campuses.
Multi-District Polls enable voters temporarily resident in one place to vote for a candidate running in the electoral district where they ordinarily reside.
The Chief Electoral Officer determines where Multi-District Polls are held.
Mobile Polls
A Mobile Poll may be available to those unable to access the polling station by reason of physical disability.
Eligible electors in a hospital, elders’ care facility, or confined to their home may wish to vote by Special Mobile Poll.
Those who are unable to attend the poll by reason of a disability may apply to the Returning Officer for their electoral district.
The schedule for when particular voting methods are available is prescribed in Part 7 of the Elections and Plebiscites Act. Please consult the Act in order to learn more about when you can vote using one of these methods.
